2018 FIBA 3×3 U18 Asia Cup Review / 纽男中女称王封后
The 4th FIBA 3×3 U18 Asia Cup held in Cyberjaya, Malaysia, concluded with New Zealand and China emerging champions of the Men and Women’s Division respectively.
New Zealand finished with a perfect 5-0 record, defeating the defending champions, China 22-15 in the finals. They would defeat Sri Lanka, Turkmenistan, Japan and Mongolia along the way. This would be New Zealand’s first appearance at the championship.
New Zealand’s Max De Geest would be named Tournament MVP for the Men’s Division
Mongolia would defeat Qatar 21-12 to clinch third spot in the Men’s Division
The 2017 third placed team, China would prevent New Zealand from winning both Divisions, by defeating New Zealand 19-12 in the finals of the Women’s Division. China would defeat Iran, Kazakhstan, China and Hong Kong in their path to the finals.
In the third placing game for the Women’s Division, Indonesia would defeat Hong Kong 15-11
For the Women’s Division, China’s Xianglin Wu earned the Tournament MVP honours.
Iran’s Matin Aghajanpour would win the tournament’s Mixed 3 Shoot Out Challenge.
Malaysia Men’s Team, represented by Ooi Xian Fu, Maegan Mahadevan, Yap Zhi Wei and Yap Run Sam would start the campaign strong, defeating Japan 17-14, before falling to China 13-21. Unfortunately for the Men’s team, they would not be able to qualify for the Quarter Finals as they would finish last in a three way tiebreaker for their Pool due to scoring the least points.
Malaysia Women’s Team, represented by Fu Yik Lyn, Hee Yeong Yee, Tan Miao Wen and Ng Hui Ying qualified for the Quarter Finals by topping their Pool. In their opening game, they would defeat Kyrgyzstan convincingly 17-8 but lost their following game to Sri Lanka 7-13. They would top the group due to scoring the most points in their group.
Unfortunately, the Malaysia Women’s Team would lose 4-22 to Indonesia in the Quarter Finals. It would be tough for the Women’s Team due to Fu Yik Lyn not being able to play.
There was still a bright spot for the Malaysia Women’s Team, as Hee Yeong Yee earned the second runner up prize for the Mixed Shoot Out Challenge.
MABA would like to congratulate the winners and participants of the 2018 FIBA 3×3 U18 Asia Cup and we look forward to seeing all of you in Malaysia again. Terima Kasih.
