60th MABA/Matrix Agong Cup Day 4 Women’s Recap

Segamat Basketball Association kept their championship hopes alive by defeating Matrix Basketball Club 72-60 in the first overtime Women’s game at the 60th MABA/Matrix Agong Cup.

The winless Matrix surprised Segamat early in the first half, with hot three point shooting by Yap Kai Chee and Tan Yun Wei ensuring Matrix took an eight point lead at the half.

Matrix kept their hot shooting form going in the third, stretching the lead to as high as 13 before the Segamat BA went on their own scoring run to make it only a three point game going into the fourth.

Foul trouble haunted Matrix late in the fourth as Segamat were slowly able to cut the lead at the free throw line. Free throws by Segamat’s Yong Sin Lu made it only a two point game with 27 seconds remaining

Ng Mei Kuan missed the potential game clinching basket for Matrix at the subsequent possession allowing Segamat to push the ball up the court where Tan Sin Jie made the game tying basket, earning the foul at the same time. Fortunately for Matrix, Sin Jie missed the potential game winning free throw to send the game to overtime.

The overtime belonged completely to Segamat as Matrix’s shooting form dropped colder than winter in Antartica as they failed to score a single point with Segamat making their baskets in calm, collective fashion to seal the 72-60 win.

Tan Pei Jie once again led Segamat with 19 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals while Matrix’s best player was Lee Phei Ling with 11 points, 17 rebounds and 4 assists.

Negeri Sembilan Basketball Association – NSBA move into a strong position to secure the 60th MABA/Matrix Agong Cup Women’s Championship by defeating Hatchers Sports Club 焱鸷 75-57.

The experienced Negeri Sembilan team with six of the 2017 SEA Games gold medalists team, proved too much for Hatchers only allowing them to take the lead for a short period in the first quarter after a three pointer by Low Hoi Khei.

A buzzer beater three pointer by Chia Mun Yi gave Negeri Sembilan the 12 point lead at the half.

Negeri Sembilan kept up their momentum on both ends for the rest of the game, steadily maintaining their double digit lead and maintaining their control of the game.

Hatchers attempted a last gap run in the fourth quarter with back to back three pointers by Tai Chia Qian and Khoo Kar Syuen cutting the lead to nine midway through the fourth quarter.

Negeri Sembilan would however, not be fazed, closing out the game on a 9-0 run sparked by Yap Fook Yee to end the game with the comfortable 18 point victory.

Negeri Sembilan’s best player was national team veteran Pang Hui Pin with a balanced performance of 17 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals.
