60th MABA/Matrix Agong Cup Men’s Finals Recap – Negeri Sembilan achieves the threepeat!
Negeri Sembilan Basketball Association – NSBA successfully secure their third Agong Cup Men’s Championship in a row, defeating Polis Diraja Malaysia (PDRM) 67-63 in an epic game of basketball!
The first quarter was a cagey affair with both teams committing 16 fouls in total. Negeri Sembilan were able to take an early 10 point lead after a Foo Ting Jun three pointer. The veterans of PDRM were then boosted by a huge dunk from 35 year old Chee Li Wei, which inspired them to cut the lead to five going into the second quarter.
PDRM started the second quarter hot with back by back three pointers from Choo Wei Hong and Liaw Chee Huei giving them the lead for the first time. Both teams traded leads throughout the quarter before PDRM took the advantage late in the quarter with a buzzer beater basket by Wee Chuan Chin giving PDRM the five point advantage at the break.
Negeri Sembilan were able to cut the lead early in the third before back to back three pointers by Loh Shee Fai made it a six point game. Wong Yi Hou would then go on his own scoring run with seven straight points to regain the lead for Negeri Sembilan. Ryan Liaw Chee Huei would however have other plans, scoring key baskets to give PDRM the three point lead going into the final quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Wong Yi Hou kept his up own scoring run, going on a tear to claw the lead for Negeri Sembilan with less than five minutes remaining. Unfortunately for Yi Hou, he would foul out of the game with four minutes remaining with a technical foul.
PDRM took advantage of this, regaining the lead and stretching the lead to four off a jumper by Loh Shee Fai.
The defending champions, Negeri Sembilan however said not today and showed their heart, scoring back to back three pointers from Liew Wei Yuong and De Wee Yiang to regain the advantage with a minute remaining. Chang Zi Fueng later went on to score a fast break layup to give PDRM the four point advantage.
Chee Li Wei was able to cut the lead to two with sixteen seconds remaining and PDRM gained an opportunity to tie the game as Ting Chun Hong failed to inbound the ball within five seconds.
Unfortunately for PDRM, Chee Li Wei turned the ball over with a travelling call, allowing Liew Wei Yuong to seal the game for Negeri Sembilan with free throws.
Negeri Sembilan’s Wong Yi Hou led his team’s scoring with 20 points, including four three pointers. PDRM’s top performer for the finals was Chee Li Wei with 19 points, 8 rebounds and 3 blocks.
