Negeri Sembilan vs NS Matrix 2 97-67
Negeri Sembilan made light work of their fellow state team, NS Matrix 2, defeating them 97-67 to secure their third straight finals appearance.
The game started close as the both Negeri Sembilan teams evenly matched, trading leads as NS Matrix 2 were keen to show their mettle against the defending champions. Yek Liang Chuan’s hot shooting kept NS Matrix 2 in the game.
Midway through the second quarter, NS Matrix 2 opted to bring on their younger line up. Unfortunately for them, the strategy did not pay off as the taller experienced Negeri Sembilan overpowered them, stretching the lead to 15 at the half thanks to the inspired offense of Ting Chun Hong and Teo Kok Hou.
The second quarter run proved too much for NS Matrix 2 to rebound from as hasty shots and cold shooting didn’t give them any opportunity to cut away at the lead.
Negeri Sembilan cruised to the easy 30 point victory.
The 2017 Finals MVP, Teo Kok Hou led Negeri Sembilan’s charge with an all round performance of 12 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists. NS Matrix 2’s Yek Liang Chuan kept up his fine scoring form with 21 points.
Polis Diraja Malaysia (PDRM) vs Westports Malaysia Dragons 74-61
The 2015 champions, PDRM, put up a strong second half display to put away the Qualifying Round champions, the Westports Malaysia Dragons 74-61.
Chiang Wei Er started strong scoring 13 of the Dragon’s 20 first quarter points, as the Dragons took a slim one point lead going into the second quarter.
PDRM started the second quarter with Loh Shee Fai’s third three pointer of the game to regain the lead .Things began to get hitted as Loh Shee Fai got called for the technical foul after a Chee Li Wei offensive foul early in the second quarter. Both teams hit the foul limit before the halfway mark of the quarter. The Dragons regained the lead through a basket by Chin Cheng Wah and took a two point lead at the break.
Dragons took a huge blow as Wei Er picked up his fourth foul early in the third quarter. With the Dragons struggling with foul trouble, PDRM regained and built a nine point lead mainly at the free throw line going into the fourth.
Joshua Gan came into the final quarter in good form, firing two back to back three pointers for the Dragons to cut the lead to three early in the fourth. The veterans of PDRM stayed firm with Chee Li Wei replying with six straight points to stretch the lead again.
The Dragons failed to cut the lead to more than six as PDRM held firm in defense, taking advantage of the careless Dragons play to finish with the 13 point victory.
PDRM’s best player was Chee Li Wei with 17 points, 14 rebound, 3 steals and 4 blocks. The Dragon’s brave fight was led by Heng Yee Tong with 13 points, 4 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 steals.
PDRM will face Negeri Sembilan in the Men’s finals in a battle of past two teams that have won the prestigious championship.
The Westports Malaysia Dragons go on to face NS Matrix 2 for the 3/4th Placing game.
