KL Dragons is a well-known professional basketball team that represents Malaysia in the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL).
The Dragons were one of the pioneer teams of the ABL alongside Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand back in 2009. To this day, the Dragons continues to play for the country in the ABL under the name Westports Malaysia Dragons – their most recent champions title was during the 2015-2016 ABL.
When Malaysia Pro League (MPL) 2017 started, they sent their lower division team – KL Dragons, comprised of young talents and a few experienced players which were chosen by a 2-day open selection.
Team owner Datuk Ruben Gnanalingam believes the fundamentals of an athlete has to be built from the start, thus having a team in the current MPL Development League is an excellent way of building the bridge between amateur players and the professional ones.
Dragons will be participating in the MPLD with Head Coach Adrian Wong and Assistant Coach Chris Eversley. Both of them are part of the professional team as (respectively) assistant coach and player.
General Manager Andri Reza explains that Chris is a good fit as an assistant coach because he’s very well experienced with basketball and coaching (Chris runs his own academy back home) and mixes very well with the locals.
Aside from participating in leagues of various levels, the team also has a running basketball academy which is open to all ages called the KL Dragons Basketball Academy that runs every Saturday (4-6PM) and Sunday (9-11AM) at Garden International School in Mont Kiara.
The team’s long-term vision is to create a regional platform of high performance sports while being a self-sustaining professional team in Malaysia.
