Malaysia National Women’s Team in preparation for the 2019 SEA Games!
We caught up with our National Women’s Team Head Coach, Yoong Sze Yuin to catch up on the plans for the Women’s Team for 2019.
Q: Coach, what has been the first step in preparations to retain the Gold Medal at this year’s SEA Games?
A: We have shortlisted 20 players to be a part of our National Training Camp and we are practicing daily from Monday to Saturday twice a day, from 7.30 AM to 9.30 AM and 5 PM to 7 PM.
Q: We noticed three key members of the 2017 SEA Games team not in the list, Pang Hui Pin, Nur Izzati and Chong Yin Yin. Can you share a little bit more with us?
A: After 15 years with the National team, Mulan (Pang Hui Pin) and Izzati feels that it’s time for new blood to step up to keep the national team fresh. Yin Yin has plans to further her studies overseas this year.
Q : Besides the SEA Games this year in November, what are the other competitions coming up for the team in 2019?
A: We will be participating in SEABA Championship if the tournament goes through this year. We will also take part in Division B of the 2019 FIBA Asia Women’s Cup which will likely be around July to August. Our target is to earn promotion to Division A.
Majlis Sukan Negara has also agreed to send the team for overseas exposure games in May and October in preparations for SEA Games. The countries will either be Australia or South Korea for May and likely to be Japan in October.
We will also be participating in an international friendly tournament in Xiamen, likely in June.
Q: Are there any major 3×3 tournaments this year for our Women’s Team?
A: Our team will participate in the Qualifying Rounds of the FIBA3x3 Asia Cup 2019 in Changsha, China. We hope to qualify for the Main Draw and make it to the quarter finals.
This year, for the first time, SEA Games will also have 3×3 Basketball. We will participate as well.
Q: Despite having quite a young group of players in the 20 shortlisted players, are you feeling confident of retaining the gold medal for SEA Games?
A : It’s always our goal to fight for the gold. We believe that we will give our best to retain. I tell my girls everyday we need to work really hard. Don’t give 100%, but 130%!!
